Microsoft has finally resolved one of the biggest annoyances in Windows 10 version 1809, as the latest cumulative update released by the company addresses the file association glitch discovered in early November.

While it took Microsoft more than one month to deal with this glitch, a fix was actually ready in November, but the software giant first wanted to test it with help from insiders. Several cumulative updates with this fix included were pushed to Windows insiders, and now that KB4469342 is available for Windows 10 version 1809, everyone can get it.

Discovered in early November, the file associations bug prevented some users from changing the defaults for a number of extensions, no matter the method they used. The settings were returned to default every time, and Microsoft confirmed the problem was caused by previous cumulative updates.

The glitch, however, existed on both Windows 10 version 1803 and Windows 10 version 1809. It was introduced by KB4464330 for version 1809, KB4462933 and KB4462919 for version 1803.

Update originally expected in late November

As explained in the official changelog of this new cumulative update, installing KB4469342 should make file associations work as expected:

“Addresses an issue that prevents some users from setting Win32 program defaults for certain app and file type combinations using the Open with… command or Settings > Apps > Default apps.”

Microsoft originally said a fix for this bug would land in late November, but the timing was then changed to December. This new cumulative update lands only a few days before Microsoft is expected to ship another batch of improvements as part of its monthly Patch Tuesday cycle.

Patch Tuesday will take place this month on December 11 and it will also include, among others, security improvements to resolve vulnerabilities that have been discovered lately, including in Windows 10 version 1809.
